What Is Root Treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system and could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out. Root treatment consists of five fundamental steps:

  1. First, a local anesthetic will be administered to ensure no discomfort is felt during the treatment and a rubber dam will be placed to isolate the tooth.
  2. The tooth will then be prepared with a drill, allowing access to the root canal system.
  3. The root canal system will be thoroughly cleaned out to remove all infection and pulp.
  4. The root canal system is then filled and sealed temporarily with a temporary filling.
  5. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

Root canal treatments always receive bad press, but the preconceived notion that root canal treatments are excruciatingly painful is simply not true. In fact, a root canal treatment relieves acute dental pain, and modern-day advances in treatment procedures have made them a virtually pain-free experience which can usually be completed in a single visit.

Benefits Of Root Treatment

There are many benefits of having a root canal treatment including preserving the healthy structure of a tooth, stopping the spread of infection and also restoring a tooth to its natural look and feel.

Signs that you might need a root canal treatment include:

  • Pain or sensitivity when consuming hot or cold food and drink

  • Pain when biting down

  • Teeth are loose.

  • Swollen gums

  • Facial swelling

  • Pus around your tooth or gum

Root canal treatment, will save your natural tooth and allow you to keep it functional for decades if not a lifetime. But just as no two people are the same, teeth also vary widely, so that the success of root canal treatment depends on many factors. Root canal treatment may fail due for a number of reasons. Sometimes, removing the old root filling and replacing it with a new one will solve the problem. At other times, it may be more sensible to extract the tooth.

A root-filled tooth often needs to be fitted with a crown. Once the root canal filling has been completed successfully, the tooth can remain in function for many years.
